ABOUT THE SHOW
“Are you Black and also Asian, or are you Asian and also Black?” A story of a young woman grappling with her mixed race identity and culture. Through music, dance, laughter, and celebration, she navigates her way through being Black, and being Asian, all the while living in White America.
Mayadevi Ross (Writer/Director): Born in New York City, and raised on both east and west coasts, Mayadevi graduated with a BFA from NYU/Tisch, where she was a member of the NSB Musical Theatre and Experimental Theatre Wing studios. Mayadevi just finished performing in Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s season of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, and Orlando. In the last year of her training at NYU, she debuted her first piece of writing, Desi-Aspora: a Bollywood Musical, which motivated her to continue sharing the stories that are often overlooked. She would not be here without the work of Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Arundhati Roy, and Angela Davis.
Mahima Saigal (Actor): Mahima Saigal is an actress, dancer, performer, choreographer, cupcake admirer, and cheerleader for everything Beyonce. Born and raised in New Delhi, India, Mahima holds a BA in History from Hansraj College, University of Delhi. She currently lives in New York City as an actress where she was recently seen in Desi-Aspora at NYU/Tisch. Mahima is a recent graduate of the Atlantic Theatre Company's Acting School.
Sanjana Shukla (Actor): Currently a Junior at NYU studying Education Studies, Sanjana Shukla is a jazz singer originating from the Bay Area. From a young age she has sung in numerous styles including disco, opera, Spanish-language, and Broadway. She received Best Talent in Miss India USA (2012). Having just appeared in The Extraordinary Fall of the Four-Legged Woman at the NYC Fringe Festival she was also an original cast member in Mayadevi’s production ofDesi-Aspora earlier this spring. Sanjana is also an accomplished filmmaker, singer, and dancer.
Gabby Hammond (Actor): Gabriela Hammond is a recent graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, studying both at the Experimental Theatre Wing and The Classical Studio. Her most recent roles include #22 in So Proudly We Hailed and Celia in As You Like It. She is very excited to be apart of this wonderful project and to be able to work with the oh-so-fabulous Mayadevi.
